Personal Interests

Carolyn’s interests are many, but first her family, husband, and daughter. Her other interests are snow skiing, quilting, stain-glass, scrapbooking, exercising, and helping others by feeding the homeless in D.C. through her church.


Carolyn Turpin brings over 30 years of experience as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. She has been a highly sought after mentor and proctor for nurse practitioner students. Her wealth of experience includes emergency medicine, cardiac step-down unit caring for open heart surgery patients, and years of primary care experience in internal medicine.

Carolyn received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the State University of New York, Buffalo, NY in 1982, where she graduated with honors as a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and completed an internship in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit at Johns Hopkins in 1981. She completed her Master of Science degree as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from George Mason University in 1991, and a post Master Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner from George Washington University in 2009. Carolyn is certified by the American Nurse Credentialing Certification (ANCC) and is a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners.

Carolyn blends her academic and professional experiences to treat and manage both acute illnesses and chronic health problems from birth to old age. Carolyn likes to educate patients and focus not only on treatment but prevention for health issues including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. She likes to work with patients to individualize appropriate health promotion strategies for exercise, nutrition, weight loss, stress management, injury prevention and smoking cessation. Carolyn is also a US Department of Transportation Certified Medical Examiner and listed on the National Registry. She joined Virginia Family Medicine in 2010.
