Acupuncture Q & A

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine practice that involves treating skin, connective tissue, and muscles. Traditionally, acupuncture corrects and improves the flow of qi, or life energy, along the meridians of your body.

Today, medical researchers believe that acupuncture points are places where nerves, muscles, and connective tissue can be stimulated. The treatment may trigger your body’s natural healing ability, increase your circulation, or provide stimulation to release impingement in your nerves, muscles, or fascia.

Which Conditions Benefit From Acupuncture?

Virginia Family Medicine offers a holistic approach to health care and incorporates alternative treatments like acupuncture into treatment plans for a wide range of conditions. For example, it can relieve many types of pain, including arthritis, low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, and headaches.

Other health issues that might benefit from acupuncture include:

  • High or low blood pressure
  • Cancer treatment side effects
  • Painful periods
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sprains
  • Sciatica
  • Tendinitis
  • Dental pain

Acupuncture might also relieve chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia and neuralgia.

What Should I Expect During an Acupuncture Treatment?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic experience. While you rest comfortably on a treatment table, Dr. Hafezi treats areas that need attention, sometimes using the acupuncture needles.  She customizes your treatment, but typically the process involves 5-20 needles. You might feel a mild pinch or a tingling sensation when she places the needles, but most people don’t find acupuncture painful.

Once the needles are in place, Dr. Hafezi may heat, twist, or gently vibrate the needles. Then, you rest for up to 30 minutes while the needles are in place. When your treatment is over, Dr. Hafezi removes and disposes of the needles.

You may need a series of acupuncture sessions to achieve your desired results.

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a drug-free pain-relief method. When performed by a trained and licensed professional like Dr. Hafezi, the treatment is safe and effective. There are no lasting side effects, and it can be combined with many other treatments. Additionally, it gives you an excuse to sit still and be quiet for up to a half-hour, which can help you relax and destress.
